EAB Racing Team secured four points in the opening race of the 2026 FIM World Supersport Championship at Phillip Island.
The new WorldSSP season got off to a positive start for EAB Racing Team during the opening round at the iconic Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit in Australia. In an extremely competitive field, the team claimed its first four championship points in Race 1 after battling for a top-ten position.
Friday featured Free Practice and Superpole qualifying. Under good conditions, solid work was done throughout the day. Although the final starting position was slightly lower than hoped, the time gaps were minimal. The field was incredibly close, with just a few tenths making the difference between several grid positions. The team showed confidence in its race pace and focused on delivering a strong start for Saturday.
That expectation became reality in Race 1. From the opening lap, there was an intense battle for positions just outside the top ten. The EAB rider remained in contention for P10 throughout the entire race, demonstrating consistent and competitive pace. In the end, this resulted in four valuable championship points — a solid start to the season. Post-race analysis showed that there was still time to gain in Sector 2, which became a key focus area heading into Sunday’s second race.
Race 2 proved to be challenging with mixed conditions. We started the race in the rain and switched to slicks during the pit stop, but unfortunately we just missed out on scoring points and closed the weekend in Australia with a 16th place. As a team we are satisfied with the way we started the season.
Pjotr Groenenberg (Team Manager): “Looking at the entire weekend, we can be satisfied with our start to the season. We scored points straight away in an really competitive field and showed a strong pace. Of course, there are still areas to improve, but the foundation is there. The team worked well together and Simon proved he adapts quickly. This is an important foundation to build on and gives confidence heading to Portimão.”
Simon Jespersen: “The first race weekend together with EAB Racing Team is done. Overall, it was a solid weekend. The field is incredibly close, so it can be frustrating to see how small the differences are. In Superpole we were just two tenths away from a top-ten starting position, which shows how competitive it is. Race 1 was decent, although I wasn’t fully satisfied with finishing twelfth. Race 2 was challenging due to the mixed conditions. Our pace in the dry was strong and we were running among the fastest in terms of lap times. That gives us confidence — now on to Portimão.”
With the first points secured, EAB Racing Team looks ahead with confidence. The foundation has been laid, the pace is there, and the focus is already shifting to the next event. The World Supersport Championship returns at the end of next month, from Friday March 27 to Sunday March 29, in Portugal at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve.
Sterke seizoensstart voor EAB Racing Team met eerste WK-punten op Phillip Island
EAB Racing Team scoort direct vier punten in de openingsrace van het FIM World Supersport Championship 2026 op Phillip Island.
Het nieuwe WorldSSP-seizoen is voor EAB Racing Team positief van start gegaan tijdens de openingsronde op het iconische Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit in Australië. In een uiterst competitief veld wist het team in de eerste race direct de eerste vier kampioenschapspunten binnen te halen na een gevecht om een top-10 klassering.
Op vrijdag stonden de vrije training en de Superpole op het programma. Onder goede omstandigheden werd er solide werk verricht. Hoewel de uiteindelijke startpositie iets lager uitviel dan vooraf gehoopt, waren de onderlinge verschillen minimaal. Het veld zat extreem dicht bij elkaar, waardoor enkele tienden direct meerdere posities verschil maakten. Het team toonde vertrouwen in de racepace en richtte zich volledig op een sterke start voor zaterdag.
Tijdens Race 1 op zaterdag werd die verwachting waargemaakt. Vanaf de openingsronde was er een mooi gevecht om de posities net buiten de top tien. De EAB-coureur bleef het volledige raceverloop in strijd om P10 en liet een constante en competitieve pace zien. Uiteindelijk leverde dit vier belangrijke kampioenschapspunten op — een solide begin van het seizoen. Na afloop wees uit dat er in sector 2 nog tijd te winnen viel en hierin werd er geanalyseerd na aanloop van de tweede race op zondag.
De tweede race op zondag bleek uitdagend door de wisselende omstandigheden. De wedstrijd begon op een natte baan, vanwege een regenbui kort daarvoor. Tijdens de race wisselden we tijdens de pitstop naar slicks, maar kwamen helaas net tekort voor punten en sloten het weekend in Australië af met een 16e plaats. Verder zijn we als team tevreden over de manier waarop we het seizoen zijn begonnen.
Pjotr Groenenberg (Teammanager): “Als we het hele weekend bekijken, mogen we tevreden zijn over onze seizoensstart. We hebben direct punten gescoord in een zeer competitief veld en laten zien dat onze pace goed is. Natuurlijk zijn er nog verbeterpunten, maar de basis is gelegd. Het team heeft sterk samengewerkt en Simon heeft laten zien dat hij zich snel aanpast. Dit is een belangrijke basis om op verder te bouwen en dat geeft vertrouwen richting de volgende wedstrijd.”
Simon Jespersen: “Het eerste raceweekend samen met het EAB Racing Team zit erop. Over het algemeen was het een solide weekend. Het veld zit ongelooflijk dicht bij elkaar, dus het is soms frustrerend als je ziet hoe klein de verschillen zijn. In de Superpole kwamen we slechts twee tienden tekort voor een top tien-startplek, dat laat zien hoe competitief het is. De eerste race was aardig, al was ik niet volledig tevreden met een twaalfde plek. Race twee was lastig door de wisselende omstandigheden. Onze pace in het droge was sterk en reden we qua rondetijden vooraan. Dat geeft vertrouwen, op naar Portimão.”
Met de eerste punten op zak kijkt EAB Racing Team met vertrouwen vooruit. De basis is gelegd, het tempo is aanwezig en de focus ligt alweer op de volgende wedstrijd. Voor dit wedstrijdweekend moeten we even geduld hebben. Eind volgende maand van vrijdag 27 tot en met zondag 29 maart komt het WK Supersport weer in actie, dan in Portugal op het circuit van Autódromo Internacional do Algarve.
