The fifth race weekend for the World Supersport Championship has passed. During the weekend of Friday 12 to Sunday 14 July, racing took place on the spectacular Donington Park circuit. Niki Tuuli and the EAB Racing Team leave England with a ninth and sixth place.
Due to the limited riding time on Friday, it is complicated to immediately create the right feeling. Nowadays, with a free practice session and then the Superpole session, you have to be there from the very first moment. During the free practice Niki was looking for the right setting to ride the Ducati machine. With some adjustments, the feeling during the Superpole on Friday afternoon was much better and he felt significantly stronger. He managed to qualify in eighth place for the first race of the weekend.
The first race started at a cloudy Donington Park. Niki maintained his position in the opening. During the race he fought some nice duels and showed that he had a good rhythm. Due to track limits on the final lap, he was dropped one position to ninth. During the race Niki struggled to exit the corners. With some changes to the Ducati Panigale V2, the team was positive for the second race on Sunday.
The second race started at 3:15 PM local time. Just like the first race, Niki had a good start and kept his position. We soon saw a red flag situation resulting in a restart. Once again the EAB Racing Team rider had a good start and managed to finish the race with a good pace in a solid sixth place. All in all, good steps in the right direction and that makes the team hopeful for next weekend’s race in Most.
Niki Tuuli: “The weekend started difficult during the free practice, where the right feeling was missing. We managed to make a big step with the bike towards Superpole and that felt good. We showed positive results in both races, with continuous improvements being made. In general, the race rhythm was positive and we are making steps in the right direction weekend by weekend. We want more but that takes time, we will take this feeling with us towards Most next weekend. Thanks to the team for the work.”
Kor Veldman: “After three weeks of rest, finally a race weekend again. Things were difficult on Friday morning, but after a few major changes for qualifying the feeling was a lot better, resulting in ninth place on the grid. During the warm-up on Saturday we made some further steps with the chassis and electronics, which gave us a better feeling. For the first race it was all about tire choice due to the low temperature. After a good start and after a few battles, he finished in a ninth place. In the second race the choice was for the soft tire and after a good race they achieved sixth place. We are happy with this, but for next week we still have some areas to improve to get towards the podium.”
There is no time to rest this time. Because everything must be packed quickly to race again next weekend at the Autodrom in Most. The Supersport World championship will take place on Czech soil from Friday 19 to Sunday 21 July.
Solide raceweekend voor EAB Racing Team in Donington Park
Inmiddels in het vijfde raceweekend voor het WK Supersport kampioenschap verstreken. In het weekend van vrijdag 12 tot en met zondag 14 juli werd er geracet op het spectaculaire circuit van Donington Park. Niki Tuuli en en het EAB Racing Team verlaten Engeland met een negende en zesde plaats.
Door de weinige rijtijd op vrijdag is het ingewikkeld om direct het juiste gevoel te creëren. Met een vrije training en vervolgens de bepalende Superpole sessie moet je er tegenwoordig vanaf het eerste moment bij staan. Niki was tijdens de vrije traning zoekende naar de juiste afstelling om de Ducati-machine te rijden. Met enkele aanpassingen was het gevoel tijdens de Superpole op vrijdagmiddag stukken beter en voelde zich beduidend sterker. Hij wist zich te kwalificeren op een achtste plaats.
Op een bewolkt Donington Park ging de eerste race van start. Niki mengde zich goed in het veld en behield zijn positie in de openingsfase. Gedurende de race vecht hij mooie duels uit en liet zien over een goed ritme te beschikken. Vanwege de tracklimits in de laatste ronde werd hij een positie teruggezet naar een negende plaats. Tijdens de race worstelde Niki met het uitkomen van de bochten. Met enkele veranderingen aan de Ducati Panigale V2 was het team positief gestemd voor de tweede race op zondag
Om 15:15 lokale tijd ging de tweede wedstrijd van start. Net zoals de eerste wedstrijd had Niki een goede start en behield zijn positie. Al gauw zagen we een rode vlag situatie met een herstart tot gevolg. Wederom had de EAB Racing Team coureur een goede start en wist met een goede pace de wedstrijd uit te rijden op een solide zesde plaats. Al met al goede stappen in de juiste richting en dat stemt hoopvol voor aankomend weekend in Most.
Niki Tuuli: “Het weekend startte moeilijk tijdens de vrije training, waarin het juiste gevoel ontbrak. We wisten een flinke stap te maken met de motor richting de Superpole en dat voelde goed. In beide races lieten we ons positief zien, waarin continu verbeteringen werden gemaakt. Over het algemeen was het race ritme positief en maken we weekend bij weekend stappen in de goede richting. We willen meer maar dat kost tijd, we nemen dit gevoel mee richting Most aankomend weekend. Bedankt aan het team voor het werk”
Kor Veldman: “Na drie weken rust weer eindelijk een raceweekend. Vrijdagochtend ging het moeizaam maar na een paar grote veranderingen voor de kwalificatie was het gevoel een stuk beter wat resulteerde in een negende plek op de grid. Tijdens de warm-up op zaterdag hebben we nog wat stappen gemaakt met chassis en electronica wat een beter gevoel gaf. Voor de eerste wedstrijd draaide het om de bandenkeuze vanwege de lage temperatuur. Na een redelijke start en na een aantal gevechten op de gefinisht als negende. De tweede race was de keus voor de zachte band gekozen en na een goede race een zesde plaats behaald. Hier zijn we blij mee maar voor volgende week hebben we nog wat puntjes om te verbeteren om toch richting het podium te komen.”
Tijd om te rusten is er ditmaal niet. Want alles moet snel worden ingepakt om aanstaande weekend weer te racen op het Autodrom in Most. Van vrijdag 19 tot en met zondag 21 juli komt het WK Supersport in actie op Tsjechische bodem.
