The EAB Racing Team and Niki Tuuli finished its first race weekend of the 2024 season on Australian soil with a seventeenth and fourteen place. The FIM World Supersport Championship kicked off its season on the Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit over the weekend of February 23 to 25. It was the first weekend with the Ducati Panigale V2 machine, which made for an educational weekend.
The official World Supersport World Championship test was completed on the Monday before the race weekend. However, the test did not go as expected for the EAB Racing Team. A large part of the test was lost due a crash and damage to the Ducati machine. As a result, the Dutch team started the race weekend with a disadvantage. Weather conditions fluctuated considerably on Phillip Island, with all-weather elements on offer. High and low temperatures, but also rain and strong winds. This characterizes the weekend in Australia.
Friday was all about the free practice and Superpole session. During the only free practice on Friday morning, the Finnish rider managed to improve his feeling with the machine, but it was still not optimal. Steps forward were also made during the Superpole, Niki managed to qualify in tenth place for the races later in the weekend.
During the races on Phillip Island a pit stop was mandatory. This had to do with the tire wear on the new asphalt of the Australian circuit. Otherwise, the tires would not have lasted the entire race. The first race of the season started at half past five Dutch time. Niki had a positive opening and remained in the top ten. However, he had to pit his Ducati machine on the fifth lap due a technical issue. He was able to continue his way but had already lost a lot of time. He had to visit the pit lane again because of the mandatory tire change. Then it was a lonely race that Niki managed to finish in seventeenth place.
The second race started much later than planned. Due a large oil trail from one of the other classes, the race started about two hours later than originally planned. This reduced the race distance to nine laps and eliminated the mandatory pit stop. Niki had not the best start and lost some places in de opening lap. After that it was difficult to find the rhythm, but he managed to score points in fourteen place.
Niki Tuuli: “It has been a difficult weekend. This already started on Monday during the test where I had a crash. It was not easy to find the feeling how to ride the bike this weekend. This made it difficult to improve the setting with the bike to have a better feeling when riding. In the end we struggled a lot and that is disappointing. I expected to have a better start to the season. We must continue the hard work and go again in Europa next month. Thanks for the EAB Racing Team for all the work.”
Kor Veldman: “We can look back on a successful weekend with a new machine and Niki Tuuli, despite some problems. We had a crash on Monday during the test and that did not help with further development. We started the race weekend with an update from Ducati, but we simply did not have enough time to test this due to the new timetable. As a result, we were behind schedule. We saw two diffrent races that we managed to finish in seventeenth and fourteenth place. We will go home with two points and will work hard again to take a step forward for Barcelona.”
The WorldSBK Championship is back in a month. Then the EAB Racing Team will be on European soil, namely during the Pirelli Catalunya Round at the Barcelona circuit in the weekend of March 22 to 24. In this meantime, the team can analyze everything and prepare for the next race.
Leerzame start van het WK Supersport seizoen in Australië voor het EAB Racing Team en Niki Tuuli
Het EAB Racing Team en Niki Tuuli sluiten zijn eerste raceweekend van het 2024 seizoen af op Australische bodem met een zeventiende en veertiende plaats. In het weekend van 23 tot en met 25 februari trapte het FIM World Supersport Championship zijn seizoen op het Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit. Het was het eerste weekend met de Ducati Panigale V2 machine, wat zorgde voor een leerzaam weekend.
Op de maandag voorafgaand aan het raceweekend werd de officiële WK Supersport test afgewerkt. Echter verliep de test niet zoals verwacht voor het EAB Racing Team. Met een valpartij en de nodige schade aan de Ducati machine ging een groot deel van de test verloren. Hierdoor begon het Nederlandse team met een achterstand aan het raceweekend. De weersomstandigheden schommelden behoorlijk op Phillip Island, waarbij alle weerselementen aanbod kwamen. Hoge en lage tempraturen maar ook regen en harde wind. Dit typeerde het wedstrijdweekend in Australië.
De vrijdag stond in het teken van de vrije training en Superpole sessie. Tijdens de enige vrije training op vrijdagochtend wist de Finse coureur zijn gevoel met de machine te verbeteren maar was daarentegen nog niet optimaal. Gedurende de Superpole werden er eveneens stappen voorwaarts gemaakt, Niki wist zich te kwalificeren op een tiende plaats voor de wedstrijden later in het weekend.
Tijdens de wedstrijden op Phillip Island moest er verplicht een pitstop worden gemaakt. Dit had te maken met de harde banden slijtage op het nieuwe asfalt van het Australische circuit. Deze zouden het anders niet de complete race volhouden. De eerste wedstrijd van het seizoen ging om half vijf Nederlandse tijd van start. Niki kende een positieve openingsfase en handhaafde zich in de top tien. Echter moest hij in de vijfde ronde zijn Ducati de pitstraat in sturen, vanwege een technisch mankement. Hij kon zijn weg vervolgen maar had intussen een forse achterstand. Daarbij moest hij nogmaals de pitstraat opzoeken vanwege de verplichte bandenwissel. Vervolgens was het een eenzame wedstijd die Niki wist finishen op een zeventiende plaats.
De tweede wedstrijd ging veel later van start dan gepland. Door een flink oliespoor van een van de andere klassen ging de wedstrijd zo ongeveer twee uur later van start dan oorspronkelijk gepland. Hierdoor werd de raceafstand teruggebracht naar een schamelijke negen ronden en verviel de verplicht pitstop. Niki had niet de beste start en verloor enkele plaatsen. Vervolgens kwam hij niet goed in zijn ritme maar weet ondanks toch punten te behalen met een veertiende plaats.
Niki Tuuli: “Het was een moeilijk weekend. Dit begon maandag tijdens de test waarbij ik crashte. Het was niet makkelijk om dit weekend het gevoel te vinden op de motor. Dit maakte het moeilijk om de afstelling te verbeteren en een beter gevoel te hebben tijdens het rijden. Uiteindelijk hebben we veel geworsteld en dat is teleurstellend. Ik had verwacht dat we een betere start van het seizoen zouden hebben. We moeten het harde werk voortzetten en ons herpakken in Europa. Bedankt aan het EAB Racing Team voor al het werk.”
Kor Veldman: “We kunnen terugkijken op een geslaagd weekend met een nieuwe machine en Niki Tuuli, ondanks enkele problemen. Maandag tijdens de test kenden wij een valpartij en dat heeft niet meegeholpen met de doorontwikkeling. Het raceweekend begonnen we met een update vanuit Ducati maar we hadden simpelweg niet genoeg tijd om dit te testen door het nieuwe tijdschema. Daardoor liepen we achter op schema. We zagen een tweetal bijzondere wedstrijden die we op een zeventiende en veertiende plek wisten af te sluiten. We gaan huiswaarts met twee punten en gaan weer hard aan het werk om voor Barcelona een stap voorwaarts te kunnen maken.”
Over een maand is het WorldSBK-kampioenschap terug. Dan is het EAB Racing Team op Europese bodem, namelijk tijdens Pirelli Catalunya Round op het circuit van Barcelona in het weekend van 22 tot en met 24 maart. In deze tussentijd kan het team alles analyseren en opmaken voor de volgende wedstrijd.
