EAB Racing Team scores World Championship points in Magny-Cours

The FIM Supersport World Championship returned to action at Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours from Friday 4 to Sunday 6 September for the Acerbis French Round. EAB Racing Team faced a challenging start to the weekend, but Simon Jespersen responded with a strong recovery in Race 1 and added more World Championship points to the team’s tally. Despite a disappointing end to Race 2, there were still clear positives to take from the weekend in France.

Friday featured Free Practice and Superpole. Throughout the day, the team continued working on the setup of the Ducati Panigale V2 and gathered important data for the races. However, an infringement during a yellow flag situation in Free Practice resulted in a penalty for Simon. This meant he had to start Race 1 from the back of the grid, regardless of his Superpole result. It created a significant challenge for Saturday, with the main focus on maintaining strong race pace and working his way forward as quickly as possible in the competitive WorldSSP field.

Despite the difficult starting position, Simon delivered a strong first race on Saturday. Starting from the back of the grid, he managed to gain several positions throughout the race and fight his way back into the points-scoring positions. After a solid race, Simon crossed the line in 14th place. This immediately added another two World Championship points to the tally after the summer break. For the second race on Sunday, the young Dane was set to start from 16th position.

Unfortunately, Sunday’s second race ended in disappointment. In the first part of the race, Simon was not in the position he had hoped for and struggled to make enough progress. Following a red flag, the race was restarted as a short five-lap sprint. Simon made a strong restart and immediately gained several positions. During the short sprint, he fought his way towards 12th place and tried to move further forward. Unfortunately, an overtaking attempt ended in a crash for the Danish rider, bringing the race to an early end.

Simon Jespersen: “There is honestly not much to say about this weekend. I had high expectations because this track normally suits me well, even if it is not necessarily my favourite circuit. We used our final engine for the season this weekend, but it still looks like we are missing some power compared to the competition on the straights. That means I have to try to make up a lot of time under braking and through the corners. On the other hand, the bike is working very well in terms of geometry and electronics. I will keep working hard towards the next races and hopefully we can achieve better results there.”

Pjotr Groenenberg – Team Manager: “It was a weekend with two different sides. On Saturday, we managed to score points again from a difficult starting position and that showed that Simon had the pace to fight his way forward. On Sunday, we expected more, especially after the strong restart. In such a short sprint race, you have to take some risks to gain positions and unfortunately the overtaking attempt ended in a crash. That is sometimes part of racing.

We know where we still need to make progress and we will continue working hard as a team. Technically, the base of the bike is strong, but in this championship small differences can have a big impact. Now we look ahead to Cremona.”

After France, the WorldSBK paddock moves on to Italy. From Friday 25 to Sunday 27 September, the Italian Round will take place at Cremona Circuit. The team will use the coming weeks to analyse the information gathered in France and continue preparing for the final part of the season.

EAB Racing Team scoort WK-punten in Magny-Cours
