The World Supersport season has come to an end for the Dutch EAB Racing Team. From Friday 18 to Sunday 20 October the last race weekend took place at the Jerez circuit in southern Spain. This weekend, the injured Niki Tuuli was replaced by the Spanish rider Mauro Gonzalez, who made his debut at world level. It took both sides time to get used to it, with the first race ending in a crash, and the team not starting the second race due a crash earlier on the day.

The weather was good last weekend, because the entire weekend was ridden under nice temperatures and a shinny autumn sun. The EAB Racing Team signed the young Spanish rider Mauro Gonzalez as a replacement for the injured Niki Tuuli. Gonzalez is a well-known name in the Spanish Supersport championship, where he is currently second in the standings. He also does this on a Ducati machine. But during the weekend in Jerez, he made his debut in the World Supersport Championship, which offered a unique opportunity.

Before the weekend it was already clear that it would be a challenging weekend with Gonzales. It was new for both parties and in the World Supersport Championship there is little time to get used to all the conditions. Nevertheless, the Spanish rider quickly got up to speed and finished the free practice in 26th position. The Superpole session was considerably more difficult, with two crashes giving the team a lot of work. In the end, the Ducati rider qualified in 27th place.

During the first race on Saturday, Gonzalez got off to a good start and managed to gain several positions in the opening laps. He rode in eighteenth place for a long time in the race and rode a solid pace. Unfortunately, he crashed halfway through the first race and had to leave the race early.

Gonzalez was eager to end the weekend with a good result after the disappointment of Saturday. However, he crashed heavily during the Warm-Up, causing the Ducati Panigale V2 machine to sustain big damage. The rider was fortunately unharmed, but the damage was that much, which meant that the Dutch racing team had to miss the last race of the season. A disappointment to end the season in this way after a difficult course of this motorsport year.

Kor Veldman: “After Estoril we went straight to Jerez. In the meantime, we found a replacement rider in Mauro Gonzalez. The young Spaniard gave us good courage for the weekend. Mauro didn’t have any pressure, and he just needed to learn on world championship level. Friday morning started well, with the lap times steadily go down. In qualifying it went well until a small crash which costed time. The feeling on Saturday morning was considerably better after a few adjustments and that gave confidence for the first race. We saw a good start during the first race, until the two crashes halfway throughout the race. Still, we were satisfied with the progress we made. During the Warm-Up on Sunday, it went better again but unfortunately Mauro had a highside. The bike caught fire and had a lot of damage. This simply took too much time to repair to give Mauro a safe bike again. Because of this we didn’t rode the second race but both parties learned a lot, which was the goal.”

Mauro Gonzalez: “It was a difficult weekend due to the short time to get used to the bike and the team. The several crashes didn’t help either. Despite the difficult weekend I would like to thank the EAB Racing Team for this unique opportunity and their hard work last weekend.”

It was an eventful season for the EAB Racing Team. The team started the season with a completely new challenge. They switched to a Ducati machine and for this they contracted the experienced Finnish rider, Niki Tuuli. Expectations were high but it turned out to be a complicated season for both, in which they still managed to achieve two podium finishes. In the end we see the EAB Racing Team back in an eleventh place in the final standings of the World Supersport Championship. In the upcoming period the Dutch team hope to give their plans about upcoming 2025 season.

EAB Racing Team sluit WK Supersport seizoen af met vervanger Mauro Gonzalez

Het WK Supersport seizoen is ten einde voor het Nederlandse EAB Racing Team. Van vrijdag 18 tot en met zondag 20 oktober werd er geracet op het circuit van Jerez in Zuid-Spanje. Dit weekend werd de geblesseerde Niki Tuuli vervangen door de Spaanse coureur Mauro Gonzalez, die hiermee debuteerde op wereldniveau. Het kostte beide partijen tijd om te wennen, waarbij de eerste race werd afgesloten met een valpartij. De tweede race ging het team niet van start vanwege een val eerder op de dag.

Het weer werkte goed mee afgelopen weekend, want het hele weekeind werd onder prettige temperaturen en een schitterende herfstzon verreden. Het EAB Racing Team trok de jonge Spaanse coureur Mauro gonzalez aan als vervanger van de geblesseerde Niki Tuuli. Gonzales is een bekende naam in het Spaanse Supersport kampioenschap, waarin hij momenteel tweede staat in de tussenstand. Dit doet hij eveneens op een Ducati machine. Maar tijdens het weekend in Jerez debuteerde hij in het WK Supersport kampioenschap, wat een unieke kans bood.

Voorafgaand aan het weekend was al duidelijk dat het een uitdagend weekend zou worden met Gonzales. Voor beide partijen was het nieuw en in het WK Supersport kampioenschap is er weinig tijd om te wennen aan alle omstandigheden. Desalniettemin kwam de Spaanse coureur aardig gauw op snelheid en sloot de vrije training af met een 26^e positie. De Superpole sessie was aanzienlijk lastiger, waarbij een valpartij het team het nodige werk opleverde. Uiteindelijk kwalificeerde de Ducati-rijder zich op een 27^e plaats.

Tijdens de eerste race op zaterdag kwam Gonzalez goed van zijn plek en wist in de openingsfase meerdere posities te winnen. Hij reed lange tijd op een achttiende plek in de wedstrijd en reed een solide tempo op weg naar de punten. Helaas kwam hij halverwege de eerste race ten val. Hij wist de machine op te pakken en zijn weg te vervolgen, totdat hij wederom crashte en na deze tweede valpartij de motorfiets in de pitbox parkeerde en zodoende de wedstrijd vroegtijdig verliet.

Gonzalez was gebrand om het weekend af te sluiten met een mooi resultaat naar de domper van zaterdag. Echter kwam hij tijdens de Warm-Up stevig ten val, waarbij de Ducati Panigale V2 machine de nodige schade opliep. De rijder bleef gelukkig ongedeerd maar de schade was aanzienlijk groot, waardoor het Nederlandse raceteam de laatste wedstrijd van het seizoen aan zich voorbij moest laten gaan. Een flinke teleurstelling om het seizoen op deze wijze te moeten afsluiten na een moeizaam verloop van dit motorsportjaar.

Kor Veldman: “Na Estoril gingen we direct door naar Jerez. In de tussentijd hebben we een vervangende rijder gevonden in de persoon van Mauro Gonzalez. De jonge Spanjaard gaf ons goede moed voor het weekend. Mauro hoefde niks en gewoon lekker leren in het wereldkampioenschap. Vrijdagochtend begon prima, waarbij de rondetijden gestaag naar beneden gingen. In de kwalificatie ging het goed tot een kleine crash roet in het eten gooide. Het gevoel op zaterdagmorgen was na een paar aanpassingen aanzienlijk beter en dat gaf moed voor de eerste race. We zagen een goede start tijdens de eerste race, tot aan de twee valpartijen. Toch waren we tevreden na de vooruitgang die we boekten. Tijdens de Warm-Up op zondag ging het weer beter maar helaas kende Mauro een highsider. De motor vatte vlam en had veel schade. Dit kostte simpelweg te veel tijd om te herstellen om Mauro weer een veilige motor te geven. Hierdoor hebben we de tweede race niet gereden maar hebben beide partijen wel veel geleerd, wat uiteindelijk de bedoeling was.”

Mauro Gonzalez: “Het was een moeilijk weekend vanwege de korte tijd om te wennen aan de machine en het team. De verschillende valpartijen hielpen hier uiteraard ook niet aan bij. Ondanks het moeizame verloop van het weekend wil ik het EAB Racing Team bedanken voor deze unieke kans en hun harde werk afgelopen weekeind.”

Het was een veelbewogen seizoen voor het EAB Racing Team. Het team startte het seizoen met een compleet nieuwe uitdaging. Ze stapten over op een Ducati machine en trokken hiervoor de ervaren Fin, Niki Tuuli aan. De verwachtingen waren hoog gespannen maar het bleek een ingewikkeld seizoen voor beide partijen, waarbij ze toch twee podiumklasseringen weten te behalen. Uiteindelijk zien we het EAB Racing Team terug op een elfde plaats in de eindstand van het WK Supersport kampioenschap. In de komende periode hoopt het Nederlandse team hun plannen voor volgend seizoen bekend te maken.
