The EAB Racing Team ends its home round at the TT Circuit in Assen with a positive feeling. In the weekend of April 19 to 21, the third round of the World Supersport Championship took place here. Niki Tuuli showed himself well in the cold and changeable weather. In the first race he crashes at the start and in the second race he scores a beautiful third place.
As you can expect in April, the weather can be cold and changeable. This is exactly what we saw during the Pirelli Dutch Round. Low temperatures, many rain showers, sunshine and strong winds. All weather conditions were there during the World Supersport round in Assen. Each session was held on a drying or completely wet track. Niki felt strong in Assen during the weekend and it was finally rewarded during the second race in Assen.
On Friday, the Finnish rider got a good start and felt good in the tricky conditions. During the free practice sessions he worked his way up to second place. As a result, he went into the Superpole session with a good feeling. With the sun shining over a drying circuit, the Ducati rider made good progress. In the final minutes of qualifying he showed good pace and managed to qualify in a respectable fifth place.
The first race on Saturday afternoon was unfortunately short-lived. Despite a good start, Niki’s race was over in the first corner. On the slick tires he contacted with a wet part of the track and lost control of his machine. He crashed, and all the other riders just managed to avoid him. Unfortunately not the opening for the EAB Racing Team they hoped for.
Just before the start of the second race it started to rain. As a result, everyone started on slick tires, but we soon saw Niki’s pit stop with a switch to rain tires. The Ducati rider has a good feeling on these tires and made his way to the front. He takes over the lead in the race and leads for several laps. In the final laps Niki drops back a little and has put the best of his tires. Ultimately he crosses the finish line in third place. An excellent result for team and rider after some difficult weekends.
Niki Tuuli: “After a difficult period, we finally succeeded this weekend. A weekend with these kinds of weather conditions is strange and no one knows where they exactly are, because we had no dry time. Unfortunately, the crash in the first race was my own fault. I went into Sunday’s race with confidence. I am a bit disappointed that we didn’t win because I had to push too much on the rain tire. We were able to maintain our position in the top six every session and the team worked well together. This result is for the team and let’s build on it!”
Kor Veldman: “Finally a podium! After a good friday we had the confidence for the races. Unfortunately the first race was short, Niki hit a little wet spot and lost control and crashed. On Sunday morning the feeling was good during the Warm-Up. We started race two with confidence, but it immediately started to rain. Niki came in early to change tires and that worked out well. After several laps in the lead, he had to give up some ground. He finished in third place, which the team and rider are extremely satisfied with. We will continue to build on this.”
For now, the World Supersport championship is on hold for an longer period. The EAB Racing Team will be back in action during the Pirelli Emilia-Romagna Round from 14 to 16 June. This will happen at the Misano circuit in Italy.
EAB Racing Team sluit thuisweekend af met een podium
Het EAB Racing Team sluit zijn thuisronde op het TT Circuit in Assen af met een positief gevoel. In het weekend van 19 tot en met 21 april vond hier namelijk de derde ronde van het WK Supersport kampioenschap plaats. In het koude en wisselvallige weer liet Niki Tuuli zich goed zien. In de eerste wedstrijd komt hij tijdens de start ten val en in de tweede race scoort hij een prachtige derde plek.
Zoals je in april kunt verwachten kan het weer verraderlijk en wisselvallig zijn. Dit is precies wat we zagen tijdens de Pirelli Dutch Round. Lage tempraturen, vele regenbuien, zonneschijn en harde wind. Alle weersomstandigheden kwamen aanbod tijdens de WK Supersport ronde in Assen. Iedere sessie werd verreden op een opdrogende of geheel natte baan. Niki voelde zich gedurende het weekend sterk in Assen maar dit werd tijdens de tweede wedstrijd in Assen dan ook eindelijk beloond.
Op vrijdag kwam de Finse coureur goed uit de startblokken en hij voelde zich goed in de listige omstandigheden. Tijdens de vrije trainingen werkte hij zich op naar een tweede plaats. Hierdoor ging hij met een goed gevoel de Superpole sessie tegemoet. Waarbij de zon over een opdrogend circuit scheen maakte de Ducati-rijder goede stappen voorwaarts. In de laatste minuten van de kwalificatie liet hij een goed tempo zien en wist zich te kwalificeren op een keurige vijfde plaats.
De eerste wedstrijd op zaterdagmiddag was helaas van korte duur. Ondanks een goede start was de wedstrijd van Niki in de eerste bocht voorbij. Op de slickbanden maakte hij contact met een nat stuk van de baan en verloor de controle over zijn machine. Hij kwam hierbij ten val, waarbij zijn collega rijders hem allemaal net wisten te ontwijken. Helaas niet de opening voor het EAB Racing Team waarvoor ze hadden getekend.
Net voor de start van de tweede wedstrijd begon het te regenen. Hierdoor startte iedereen op slick banden maar zagen we al gauw pitstop van Niki met een wissel naar de regenbanden. Op deze banden heeft de Ducati coureur een goed gevoel en baant zijn weg naar voren. Hij neemt de kop over in de wedstrijd en rijdt meerdere ronden aan de leiding. In de slotfase zakt Niki iets terug en heeft hij het beste van zijn banden gevergt. Uiteindelijk komt hij als derde over de finishlijn. Een uitstekend resultaat voor team en rijder naar enkele moeilijke weekenden.
Niki Tuuli: “Na een moeilijke periode lukte het dit weekend eindelijk. Een weekend met dit soort weersomstandigheden is vreemd en niemand weet waar ze precies staan, omdat we geen droge tijd hadden. Helaas was de valpartij in de eerste race mijn eigen fout. Met vertrouwen ging ik de race op zondag in. Wel ben ik een beetje teleurgesteld dat we niet hebben gewonnen omdat ik te veel op de regenband moest pushen. Elke sessie konden we ons handhaven in de top zes en het team werkte goed samen. Dit resultaat is voor het team en laten we hierop verder bouwen!”
Kor Veldman: “Eindelijk een podium! Na een goede vrijdag hadden wij het vertrouwen voor de wedstrijden. Helaas was de eerste race van korte duur, Niki kwam iets op het natte en verloor de controle en crashte. Op zondagmorgen was het gevoel goed tijdens de Warm-Up. Vol vertrouwen begonnen we aan race twee maar het begon direct te regenen. Niki kwam vroeg binnen om banden te wisselen en dat pakte goed uit. Na een aantal rondes aan de leiding moest hij toch iets terrein prijsgeven. Uiteindelijk op plek drie gefinisht waar het team en rijder onwijs tevreden mee zijn. Hier gaan we op verder bouwen.”
Voor nu ligt het World Supersport kampioenschap een langere periode stil. Het EAB Racing Team zal tijdens de Pirelli Emilia-Romagna Round van 14 tot en met 16 juni weer in actie komen. Dit zal gebeuren op het circuit van Misano in Italië.
