Last weekend, the World Supersport Championship was hosted at the new Cremona circuit in northern Italy. The weekend started off difficult for Niki Tuuli and the EAB Racing Team, but during the races significant steps forward were made. The race weekend ended with a ninth place in the first race and a tenth place in the second race.
On Friday morning the free practice was held on an almost dry circuit during the Acerbis Italian Round. In this session, it was important to gain track knowledge despite the more difficult conditions. Niki managed to work his way up to a sixth time on the short Cremona circuit in this session.
During the Superpole, it was considerably more difficult for the Finnish rider. He could not create the desired feeling on the Ducati Panigale V2 machine that he had in mind. The set-up was not optimal for the EAB Racing Team rider, which made him less confident to fully commit to an ultimate lap. After a difficult qualification, Niki had to settle for a nineteenth starting position for the first race on Saturday afternoon.
Despite a difficult Superpole, it was a positive first race for the EAB Racing Team. The team and rider found a good setting that suited his riding style. This gave him significantly more confidence and that paid off in a positive result. During the first race, Niki made up several places and finished the first race on the Cremona circuit in ninth place. The most important thing was that the feeling on the machine had improved considerably and that was positive for the second race on Sunday.
In the second race on Sunday, Niki managed to ride towards a tenth place. The position did not show it completely, but the set-up and the feeling on the bike had improved considerably during the weekend through various adjustments. This allowed Niki to control the bike better and ended the weekend with two top ten results.
Kor Veldman (teammanager): “The start of the weekend was difficult. On friday we lacked the feeling with the bike. Qualifying was also incredibly difficult, and we didn’t get any further than a nineteenth starting position. On Saturday morning we tried something during the Warm-up that gave us a better feeling. This gave us confidence going into the first race. Niki had a reasonable start but was pushed out wide. After a difficult start he managed to work his way up to ninth place. On Sunday Niki managed to gain several positions during the opening laps and fought his way to tenth position. We are still in the top ten of the championship and still could gain a few more positions.”
Niki Tuuli: “We made great progress last weekend. At the beginning of the weekend, I didn’t feel so good on the bike, but then we changed the set-up for the first race, and it worked out well. I’m happy with how I felt on the bike, but we still must find the little solutions to go even faster. We keep working hard and I got the most out of it. Thanks to the team for the work, on to Aragon!”
There is no time to recover for the EAB Racing Team and Niki Tuuli. From Italy, the World Superbike paddock goes straight to Spain. This is where the tenth race of the season will be held next weekend. This will take place at Motorland Aragon from Friday 27 to Sunday 29 September.
Stappen voorwaarts voor het EAB Racing Team in Cremona
Afgelopen weekend was het WK Supersport kampioenschap te gast op het nieuwe circuit van Cremona in noord-Italië. Het weekeind begon lastig voor Niki Tuuli en het EAB Racing Team maar tijdens de wedstrijden werden stappen voorwaarts gemaakt. Het raceweekend werd afgesloten met een negende plaats in de eerste race en een tiende plaats in de tweede race.
Vrijdagochtend werd de vrije training verreden op een grotendeels droge circuit tijdens de Acerbis Italian Round. Hierin was het zaak om baankennis op te doen ondanks de moeilijkere omstandigheden. Niki wist zich in deze sessie op te werken richting een zesde tijd op het korte en bochtige circuit van Cremona.
Tijdens de Superpole was het aanzienlijk lastiger voor de Finse coureur. Hij kon niet het gewenste gevoel op de Ducati Panigale V2 machine creëren dat hij voor ogen had. Hierdoor was de set-up niet optimaal voor de EAB Racing Team coureur, waardoor hij minder vertrouwen had om volledig aan te zetten voor een ultieme ronde. Ook gele vlag situaties en tracklimits hielpen niet mee in deze training. Na een moeizaam verlopen kwalificatie moet Niki genoegen nemen met een negentiende startplaats voor de eerste wedstrijd op zaterdagmiddag.
Ondanks een matige Superpole was het een positieve eerste wedstrijd voor het EAB Racing Team. Samen met Niki werd een goede setting gevonden die paste bij zijn rijstijl. Dit gaf hem beduidend meer vertrouwen en dat betaalde zich uit in een positief resultaat. Tijdens de eerste wedstrijd maakt Niki meerdere plaatsen goed en eindige de eerste race op het circuit van Cremona op een negende plaats. Het belangrijkste was dat het gevoel op de machine een flink stuk verbeterd was en dat stemde positief voor de tweede race op zondag.
In de tweede race op zondag weet Niki zich richting een tiende plaats te rijden. De positie liet het niet geheel zien maar de set-up en het gevoel op de motor waren tijdens het weekend een flink stuk verbeterd doormiddel van verschillende aanpassingen. Hierdoor kon Niki de motorfiets beter besturen en sloot het weekend af met tweemaal een top tien klassering.
Kor Veldman (teammanager): “We begonnen het weekend op vrijdagmorgen moeizaam, waarbij het gevoel met de motor ontbrak. Ook tijdens de kwalificatie was het ontzettend lastig en kwamen we niet verder dan de negentiende startpositie. Op zaterdagmorgen hadden we tijdens de Warm-up iets geprobeerd wat een beter gevoel gaf. Hierdoor gingen we met vertrouwen de eerste race tegemoet. Niki kende een redelijke start maar werd iets naar buiten geduwd. Na een moeizaam begin wist hij zich toch op te werken richting een negende plaats. Op zondag wist Niki direct een aantal posities te winnen en vocht zich richting een tiende positie. We staan nog netjes in de top tien van het klassement met mogelijkheden om nog enkele posities te winnen.”
Niki Tuuli: “We hebben afgelopen weekend mooie stappen vooruit gemaakt. In het begin van het weekend voelde ik me nog niet zo goed op de motor, maar toen hebben we voor de eerste race de set-up veranderd en dat pakte goed uit. Ik ben blij met hoe ik mij op de motor voelde, maar we moeten nog steeds de kleine oplossingen vinden om nog sneller te gaan. We blijven hard werken en heb het uiterste eruit gehaald. Tijd om bij te komen is er niet voor het EAB Racing Team en Niki Tuuli. Van Italië gaat het World Superbike paddock direct door naar Spanje. Hier zal aankomend weekend namelijk alweer worden geracet voor de tiende wedstrijd van het seizoen. Dit zal gebeuren op Motorland Aragon van vrijdag 27 tot en met zondag 29 september.
